Athlete Spotlight: Madison Davis, Lee-Scott Academy
Last September, Lee-Scott Academy junior softball player Madison Davis became eligible for recruitment and started hearing from several universities. A month later, she was offered a softball scholarship from Samford University and committed the next day.
Davis began playing softball as a 10-year-old after seeing her best friend play in a recreational game. She said she immediately told her mom she wanted to play softball, so they signed her up.
Two years later, Davis knew she wanted to start taking her softball career more seriously, so she joined the Birmingham Vipers, a fastpitch softball organization. The Vipers train and compete during the summer and fall months when school ball is not in season.
Davis continued to play with the Vipers, always competing in the division above her age group, improving her skills. Competing in team sports has always been something she enjoys doing, loving the bond and relationships she forms with her teammates.
“The most enjoyable thing is just being up with your teammates, like when good things are happening and we are getting hits,” Davis said. “Cheering in the dugout and having that team energy just makes the game so much fun.”
Since seventh grade, Davis has also been competing with the track and field team. She always had a love for running and knew she was fast. Davis competes in the short distance races such as 100m, 200m, 400m, 4x100 relay and the long jump.
At Lee-Scott, Davis serves as an ambassador, a leadership position that promotes the mission of the school and represents Lee-Scott in community projects, welcoming guests to campus and assisting with school events. She is also a member of the school’s Anchor Club, Spanish Club and Key Club.
When she is not training or playing in softball tournaments, Davis spends her time on the lake with her friends and family.
As a middle infielder, mostly playing shortstop, Davis emphasized the importance of working together with her teammates and keeping the energy up.
“It’s a huge thing, that positive energy,” Davis said. “Especially in softball, like it is super mental, you are going to fail a lot. You have to have those girls around you keeping positive energy.”
Davis said Samford has always been at the top of her list both athletically and academically. While at Samford, she plans to study law with a focus in family law.
